When we launched

Comment is free Liberty Central site in January 2009, threats to individual rights and freedoms seemed a little different. The Labour government had planned to introduce compulsory identity document, CCTV has been a hot topic and the board seemed to enjoy extraordinary powers to monitor the activities of people. On the other hand, some things have not changed: Jack Straw described the parts of the Act on the rights of "bad" letter ", the right to a fair trial was threatened, and there were concerns about Government plans to collect information about individuals in a database.

Ideally we renovated Liberty Central shortly after legislation weak, but significant, the Act on the Protection of Freedoms, entered into the Book of the Law, May 1. This package is intended to allay fears about the retention of DNA, CCTV, police and the powers of local authorities and a number of other violations of individual freedom (including, highly commendable, has ignored the right of men convicted of sodomy conviction). But the threats to freedom concerns mutate and change. What treaty the United States and the United Kingdom, which saw UK citizens extradited for trial in the United States? Does the lawyer wiretapping scandal stronger for the right to privacy? People still have the right to protest important? Committee Charter is an organization hopelessly divided, or a serious threat to the Act human rights? We should be able to deport someone to a country where trial evidence against him may have been obtained under torture - the major challenge in the saga of Abu Qatada? Why the government wants to hold more hearings in secret?

We covered all these topics in Comment is free, but noted that "Liberty Central" was not the best title under which organized. First, the Tea Party movement in the United States - not a natural ally for the Guardian - has been appropriated expression. Second, there is a strong political tension between the words "human rights" and "civil liberties." The left, with its (usually) support instinctive Act rights, tend to gain weight for the first law, which prefers to speak of "responsibility" and would prefer a bill on HRA rights, chose the latter. Civil liberties are also an important aspect of American political debate. Both are essential and we tried to recognize in our new title, rights and freedoms.
